Bad news: a phrase that is both direct and foreboding. It precedes information ranging from mundane to tragic, but in the moment after the news is evoked, it elicits a fear of the inevitable. Discover a quirky exhibition dedicated to these two little words at Loyola University Chicago’s Ralph Arnold Gallery this Thursday, November 8th.

The works in Bad News challenge and provoke us, whether it be through an apocalyptic vision or sense of dread inspired by our current climate. Some works find the humor in bad news, while others reveal important realities.

Artists Maria Gaspar, Jonathan Herrera, Chris Kerr, Nate Mathews, Cheryl Pope, and Krista Wortendyke use photography, printmaking, drawing and sculpture to create works that are unflinching it the face of dark realities. The artists in this exhibition illuminate the uncomfortable beauty in bad news while charging us to question the world around us.

The Ralph Arnold Gallery is part of the Department of Fine and Performing Arts at Loyola University Chicago. The gallery’s goal is to foster conversations about contemporary art between local artists, the student population, and the community at large. The gallery offers lectures by selected artists and curators working in the Midwest and Chicago. All events are free and open to the public.
